Columbia University Amateur Radio Club

The oldest Amateur Radio Club in the world was founded at Columbia University in 1908 as the “Wireless Telegraph Club of Columbia University”. Shortly after, the Club obtained the 2XM Amateur Radio Callsign.
Recently, some students decided to revive activities and on June 24th they activated their current callsign – W2AEE – during the ARRL Field day from Morningside Park in Manhattan.
The portable station consisted of two QRP transceivers, both battery powered, and two antennas: a loaded vertical antenna and a magnetic loop. All contacts were made on the 20 meters band. Skip was short therefore DX contacts were just Guatemala, Puerto Rico and Canada.
The Columbia Students were joined by one of my best friends, Alain De Carolis (K1FM) who left Italy for New York City in 2007 to pursue his career.
I thought it was nice to see renovated interest in our hobby, especially when it comes from such a prestigious and historic institution.
