Giuseppe GIUSTINIANO (Italy)
I’m a former radio operator Giustiniano Giuseppe born in Pizzo Calabro on 1951. Graduated from the Torre del Greco school and after obtained my Certificate of First Class Radiotelegraphist, I made my first embark with Sirm (Italian Radio Company – QRC IU02) on some ships of Montanari Navigating Society with main office in Ravenna, then I did some embarks with the Telemar (QRC IU03) on many ships of D’amico (ROME). Finally, I have spent the last 15 years with Sirm on the Tirrenia, Siremar and Adriatica ferry boats retiring in 2006. I am now amateur radio with callsign IK8EFI and recently I won for the 150th anniversary of G. Marconi birth with 3810 points; I attach a photo of the diploma.
The Award
On January 2002 I was on a Ferry of the Adriatica Shipping Company, after left Ancona headed for Durazzo (I remember that there was a very strong south-westerly wind with a sea force 7 to 8), we were sailing along our peninsula to avoid bad weather, then when we reached the coast of Puglia I received a distress call from a large fishing boat from Molfetta which was sinking at 30 miles off the coast of Montenegro. After a brief QSO with Italian Coast Guard in Rome (Maricogecap Roma) and the coast radio station of Bari Radio (c/s IPB) we received the order to proceed with the rescue of the crew of that fishing vessel named “CUNEGONDA”, so after about 3 hours we arrived on site and with great difficulty we”pulled on board” the five sailors who were on two self-inflating rafts. Everything was then reported on national TV. The Ferry were I was on duty was the M/V “PALLADIO”, here is a picture. Here the link of the Newspaper still online where it is reported the distress and search and rescue event: http://www.pizzocalabro.com/Orlando/Personaggi/Giuseppe%20Giustiniano.htm
