Jim “Ross” ANDERSON (Australia)

 

I joined the Royal Australian Navy in June 1961 and was rated as follows:

Ordinary Radio Operator                            1962

Radio Operator                                               1963

Leading Radio Operator                              1964

Petty Officer Radio Supervisor                  1966

Chief Petty Officer Radio Supervisor       1970

Warrant Officer Radio Supervisor            1979

I served on HMA Ships Quickmatch VLNF, Quiberon VLND, Queenborough VLNZ, Banks VKDF, Stuart VKCK I/C and twice on HMAS Vampire VJZC (VKMC) I/C Radio Communications.

I also served as an Instructor at the RAN School of Communications and was the Facilities Chief at NAVCOMMSTA Canberra (the RAN’s primary communications Station).

In the late 70’s I spent two years as an assistant to the Director of Naval Communications, Navy Office, Canberra.

I also instructed members of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force in Maritime Communications for a period of 2 years.

In 1975 I was awarded a Naval Board Commendation for providing communications support to the Prime Minister of Australia at the Chief’s and Heads of Government Meeting held in Apia, Western Samoa.

I retired from the RAN in 1981 and took up an instructional role in Technical and Further Education (TAFE).

I went into permanent retirement 1998 following a heart attack and open heart surgery.

I became an Amateur Radio Operator in 2000 (from memory) and my current callsign is VK4AQ.

These days I am a volunteer teacher aide and do volunteer work in remote schools or on cattle properties.
