Jon ROBERTS (England)

Hailing originally from Manchester – UK, born 4th March 1952, I attended the International Marine Radio College in Brook’s Bar Manchester from September 1969 through to December 1971. During that time, I obtained my MRGC Certificate – M/70 and the Board of Trade Radar Maintenance Certificate – 4522 and swiftly gained employment with the Cunard Steamship Company (Radio & Electronic Services) as a Radio Officer onboard the ACL Container ship – Atlantic Causeway -GZML. I may hasten to add, that this was in a Junior capacity as I still needed my qualifying sea-going time to endorse my maritime qualifications. Further voyages on the Atlantic Causeway-GZML & Atlantic Conveyor-GZMM soon had my ticket endorsed and me being packed off around the world to fend for myself.
I worked on various vessels of the Cunard Fleet: Container-RoRo, Reefer, Tankers, Bulk Carriers and even had a daliance with J. Marr trawlers off Iceland.
My maritime career was fairly short as I started in the summer of 1971 (Trawlers) and took my final exit in March 1977, a most enjoyable and memorable experience. I now operate the amateur callsign G4ZMM in memory of the S.S. Atlantic Conveyor-GZMM and her crew, sadly lost in the Falklands conflict of 1982.
