Mirko SEL (Slovenia)

I started to learn telegraphy in local radio club at age of 12. My CW teacher Ciril also RO https://trafficlist.inorc.it/radio-officer/ciril-derganc/ introduced all members about beauties of working on ships as a RO with his own photos, short movies and stories. He even organized visiting M/V Portoroz/YTOJ in Slovenian drydock Izola for all of us and my decision was made! But not only mine, three of young radio amateurs served later on ships in radio rooms.

Accidentally I was embarked on the same ship as apprentice RO in 1979 on the line around the world and finished my apprenticeship on M/V Maribor/YTMD in 1980. After passing exams for Radio Officer I didn’t go back to sea at once but finished study electricity first.

I served as a Chief RO from 1985 to 1988 on bulk carriers M/V Novo Mesto/YTTW, M/V Nova Gorica/YTTX and M/V ROG/YTMR.

On my voyages I always worked also on amateur frequencies with call signs YU3TLC/MM and YU3RE/MM.

Fortunately I visited a lot of beautifull harbors, cities, places and countries on all continents what was my big wish since my very young years.

Now I work in Slovenian electricity production company and I’m active on amateur bands with call sign S51RE, mostly CW.

In the picture on top I was on board M/V “NOVA GORICA”
